Left Edge Percussion Announces Call for Scores

Left Edge Percussion, ensemble in residence at the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University, seeks submissions for our 2019–20 Composition Competition. We are interested in composers from diverse backgrounds, media, and musical ideas to compose a new percussion ensemble work for 4–6 players to be premiered by Left Edge Percussion. 

Winner will receive:

  • $1,000 Prize

  • Certificate of Competition First Prize

  • $500 travel stipend

  • Composer’s residency (required) at Southern Oregon University. Arrival Monday, May 25 – Departure, Friday, May 29, 2020

  • Housing and meals provided

  • World premiere of new work by Left Edge Percussion - Thursday, May 28, 2020, 7:30pm

  • Livestream of concert

  • Archival audio and video recording

  • Professionally bound score of new work, autographed by members of Left Edge Percussion

  • New composition’s inclusion in the SOU Hannon Library and the SOU Percussion Library

Guidelines:

  • Number of players: 4–6 

  • Length of work: 5-15 minutes

  • Instrumentation: open

  • With or without electronics

  • .mp3 recording optional (score demo)

Eligibility:

  • Current faculty, staff, or students of Southern Oregon University are ineligible

Deadline/Entry:

  • Deadline for submission is February 15, 2020, 11:59:59 PM Pacific Standard Time

  • Score submissions should be in PDF format and labeled “LastName_FirstName_Title.pdf”

  • Audio renderings or recordings of submissions are highly encouraged. Please submit as an .mp3 file, not to exceed 25mb. Label file as “LastName_FirstName_Title.mp3”

  • The winning work will be selected by its innovative compositional language and use of the percussion quartet–sextet in an inventive style, clear and professional score-writing (hand-written or computer-generated scores are acceptable), and how it conforms to the guidelines given in the call for scores. 

  • Compositions submitted must be new works which have not yet been performed, recorded, or selected for another prize.

  • Left Edge Percussion—Terry Longshore, Artistic Director—makes diversity, inclusion, and equity a primary focus of the ensemble’s work. Left Edge Percussion seeks to contribute to the canon of percussion works by ALAANA (African/Black, Latinx, Asian/South Asian, Arab/Middle Eastern, and Native American), women, and gender non-conforming composers and highly encourages submissions from those communities.

  • Prize winner will be notified via email by March 1st, 2020
